About Matt Tonkin
Matt Tonkin’s martial arts journey began at the age of 12 when he first encountered karate during a school holiday program. Although this initial experience didn’t fully resonate with him, it ignited a lifelong passion for martial arts.
Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a desire to master the perfect martial art, Matt embarked on an extensive journey, training in various styles including Wing Chun Kung Fu, Judo, Aikido, Boxing, and Kickboxing under Ross Purcell at the Bob Jones ZDK Academy.
In 1993, a pivotal moment arrived when Matt’s best friend introduced him to Japanese Ju-Jitsu. Intrigued but unsure of what to expect, Matt attended his first class at the Progressive Ju-Jitsu Academy. It was here that Matt discovered the martial art that truly resonated with him. Within weeks, he had fully immersed himself in the practice, finding the balance and effectiveness he had long sought.
Recognizing Matt’s dedication and natural talent, Sensei Michael Pezzimenti invited him to assist with teaching the junior classes—a role that marked the beginning of Matt’s teaching career. This experience not only refined his skills but also ignited his passion for sharing martial arts with others. He earned his 1st Dan Black Belt in 1999.
In 1997, Matt attended a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar and was captivated by this dynamic martial art. After attending multiple seminars in the following years, he began his BJJ journey at Peter De Been’s Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in 2001. This path led him to form a strong friendship with Ninos Dammo of the Australian Elite Team Jiu Jitsu Academy, where Matt eventually trained. Under Coach Ninos, Matt and Northern MMA became the first affiliates of the Australian Elite Team, a partnership that continues to this day. He earned his 1st Degree BJJ Black Belt in 2012.
Today, Matt Tonkin is the proud owner and head instructor of Northern Mixed Martial Arts, where he continues to inspire and mentor students with the same enthusiasm and commitment that has defined his journey. He holds a 5th Dan in Japanese Ju-Jitsu under Shihan Anthony Flask of Combat Ju-Jitsu Academy and a 3rd Degree in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professors Ninos Dammo and Gustavo Falciroli. His diverse background and deep understanding of multiple martial arts styles make him a uniquely qualified and respected leader in the martial arts community.
