Japanese Ju-Jitsu at Northern MMA
At Northern Mixed Martial Arts, our Japanese Ju-Jitsu program stands as a unique blend of tradition and modern innovation. Developed by Head Instructor Matt Tonkin, this style of Freestyle Ju-Jitsu combines classical Japanese Ju-Jitsu techniques with effective, practical applications for real-world self-defense. Over decades of training and refinement, Matt has created a system that remains deeply rooted in the core principles of Japanese Ju-Jitsu while evolving to meet the demands of modern martial arts.
Origins of Freestyle Ju-Jitsu
Matt’s journey in Japanese Ju-Jitsu began in 1992 at Combat Ju-Jitsu Academy under the guidance of Sensei Anthony Flask and Sensei Michael Pezzimenti. His early training focused on the traditional aspects of Japanese Ju-Jitsu, emphasizing leverage, joint manipulation, and efficient use of energy to control opponents. After earning his Black Belt in 1999, Matt realized there was more to explore within the art. He began experimenting with various techniques, combining elements from different martial arts styles to create Freestyle Ju-Jitsu—a system that blends the effectiveness of traditional Ju-Jitsu with the flexibility needed for modern combat scenarios.
A Focus on Practical Self-Defense
Freestyle Ju-Jitsu at Northern MMA places a strong emphasis on functional self-defense. The curriculum is designed to give students practical skills that can be applied in real-life situations, making it a versatile and effective system. Techniques such as joint locks, throws, and takedowns form the foundation of the training, providing students with the tools they need to neutralize opponents of any size. The art’s roots in traditional Japanese Ju-Jitsu ensure a solid understanding of balance, control, and efficiency, while Matt’s modern adaptations ensure its relevance in today’s world.
Integrating Groundwork from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
A key feature of Matt’s Freestyle Ju-Jitsu is its integration of ground-fighting techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). After earning his Black Belt in BJJ under Ninos Dammo of the Australian Elite Team, Matt brought the principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into his system. This addition enhances the groundwork component of Freestyle Ju-Jitsu, allowing students to defend themselves effectively on the ground, utilizing submissions, escapes, and positional control. By combining the strengths of Brazilian and Japanese styles, Matt’s system offers a comprehensive approach to both stand-up and ground fighting.
Traditional Roots, Modern Evolution
While Matt’s Freestyle Ju-Jitsu has incorporated elements of other martial arts, it remains true to its origins in Japanese Ju-Jitsu. The techniques are taught with a focus on precision, control, and efficiency—hallmarks of traditional Japanese martial arts. Students at Northern MMA receive instruction in a system that has evolved over time but still honors the discipline, respect, and deep technical understanding that define Japanese Ju-Jitsu.
